Are Temporary Methods of Hair Removal Better Than Electrolysis?

There are so many options in today’s world for getting rid of unwanted hair growth. The challenge is not finding available methods, but rather, methods that actually work. From home remedies and depilatories, to waxing strips, lasers, and more, the choices are easy to see, but not as easy to understand. Some products and services are advertised to be permanent solutions to unwanted hair, but the truth is, electrolysis is the only method of permanent hair removal recognized by the FDA and AMA. However, many people are unsure whether or not electrolysis is the right choice with so many other options. In fact, many people are still sticking to temporary methods of hair removal as a result of common misconceptions surrounding electrology.

Continue reading to learn the truth about temporary methods of hair removal, and why electrolysis is your best solution for getting that smooth skin you’ve been dreaming of.

Temporary Hair Removal Options

The most common and popular hair removal options that are not permanent, and therefore temporary, include tweezing, shaving, depilatories, waxing, and laser hair removal. It is very likely that you have tried at least a couple of these options. How have they worked for you? Tweezing can be painful and tedious; shaving can also be painful, and render undesirable side effects like bumps, burns, and scars; waxing is another painful option, and one that can be done professionally or on your own depending on your comfort level, skills, and budget; and then there’s laser hair removal, which everyone thinks is permanent, but it is in fact, not permanent.

Depilatories: Depilatories are over-the-counter hair removal creams specially-formulated with alkaline chemicals to temporarily remove hair from the skin. These ingredients break down Keratin, the protein structure of your hair, rendering hair weakened. In this state, hair is dissolved and gelatinous, so it can be easily wiped away with a damp towel. But hair removal creams are not a permanent method, and require several reapplication treatments as the hair grows back.

Tweezing, Waxing, and Shaving: Tweezing and waxing manually removes the hair from the follicle, but it is still not a permanent method of hair removal since the papilla, or the growth center for hair within the follicle, is not destroyed. Therefore, the hair will continue to regrow. Shaving simply cuts the hair off at the surface, and only lasts a matter of hours. Within 12 hours of shaving, you can already notice hair regrowth.

Laser Hair Removal: Laser hair removal uses a concentrated beam of light (laser) that converts to heat, thus damaging the tube-shaped sacs within hair follicles. This technology is not a permanent solution to unwanted hair growth. Instead, the procedure only delays hair growth for a long time, making it a hair reduction method, rather than a hair removal method. Furthermore, laser hair removal can be used on most areas of the body, but not on the eyebrows.

Why Electrolysis is Better for Permanency

Electrolysis is the process of using heat or chemical energy to permanently remove unwanted body hair by destroying the central growth cells of hair follicles. A specialized IB probe is inserted into a hair follicle to send an electrical current straight to the root of the hair, which cauterizes the papilla and deters a follicle’s ability to produce more hair. As mentioned, electrolysis is the ONLY permanent hair removal method recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is best suited for all hair and skins types, regardless of color, texture, and sensitivity, and can be used on virtually any area of the body where hair grows.
