Electrolysis for Permanent Hair Removal

There are several options, both over the counter and through professional services, that are marketed for hair removal. However, there are very few options for actual permanent hair removal. In fact, the ONLY permanent hair removal method approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is a treatment called electrolysis. Electrolysis is so widely accepted and recommended as a permanent hair removal solution that even the American Medical Association and Federal Drug Administration supports electrolysis, recognizing it as a safe and permanent method of hair removal.

What Electrolysis Does to Hair

Electrolysis is the process of using heat or chemical energy to permanently remove unwanted body hair by destroying the central growth cells of hair follicles. It is perfect for most areas of the body, including the face, arms, legs, back, shoulders, chest, breasts, bikini line, under arms, chin, upper lip, and more. A specialized electrology medical device called an IB probe is inserted into an individual hair follicle, sending an electrical current straight to the root of the hair. This electrical current cauterizes the papilla, thus hindering the follicle’s ability to produce more hair.

Electrolysis unique compared to laser hair removal and similar technologies because of the science behind the IB probe. Unlike regular “straight needles”, the IB Probe has insulation along it, which keeps discharge of electric current from appearing on the shaft. The current is then able to concentrate at the tip, where the IB Probe approaches the papilla. The tip of the IB Probe is non-insulated and slightly thicker than the insulated shaft, which ensures contact between the IB Probe tip and papilla. It also ensures that the IB Probe will not pierce the skin, and can only enter the skin at the opening of the hair follicle.

Where to Get a Consultation for Electrolysis

Just like most services, there are endless providers to choose from. But when it comes to your body’s largest organ, choosing the right provider is of the upmost importance. As for unwanted hair, services are usually more intensive in nature, making your provider selection vital to your overall outcome. When choosing an Electrologist, the first quality to look for is an active electrology license in the same state. Aside from an active Indiana license, experience is key. Choose a professional who has at least 10 years of hands-on experience in the industry. You can ask about references or request to see client testimonials or portfolios.

Electrolysis vs. Laser Hair Removal

Procedure:

Electrolysis is the process of using heat or chemical energy to permanently remove unwanted body hair by destroying the central growth cells of hair follicles. A specialized IB probe is inserted into a hair follicle to send an electrical current straight to the root of the hair, which cauterizes the papilla and deters a follicle’s ability to produce more hair. In contrast to electrolysis, laser hair removal uses a concentrated beam of light (laser) that converts to heat, thus damaging the tube-shaped sacs within hair follicles.

Permanency:

Electrolysis is the ONLY permanent hair removal method recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Laser hair removal is not a permanent solution to unwanted hair growth. Instead, the procedure only delays hair growth for a long time, making it a hair reduction method, rather than a hair removal method.

Pain:

During electrolysis procedures, the amount of pain or level of comfort will differ depending on a client’s sensitivity. In most cases, clients feel minimal to moderate discomfort. Laser hair removal is reported to be moderately to highly painful, but it also depends on the particular person’s pain tolerance. In both cases, electrolysis and laser hair removal are said to potentially cause a variety of normal side effects, including minor skin reddening, irritation, skin discoloration, and more.

Skin Types:

Electrolysis is best suited for all hair and skins types, regardless of color, texture, and sensitivity. On the other hand, laser hair removal is not. Instead, laser hair removal is best suited for individuals with dark hair and light skin. Those with darker skin and hair, or very light hair, will not get great results with laser methods.

Areas of the Body:

Electrolysis can be used on virtually any area of the body where hair grows. It is well suited for anyone, regardless of age, gender, skin type, hair type, and more. Laser hair removal is a little more restrictive, as it can be used on most areas of the body, but not on the eyebrows.

Electrologist Credentials

Keep in mind that a licensed Electrologist is not a medical doctor, nor do they have a medical degree or license. Instead, they are Certified Professional Electrologists (C.P.E.’s), which means they are cosmetology professionals who have completed a rigorous course of academics and training at a trade school or college.

Certification requirements for an Electrologist vary from state to state. Some states do no regulate the practice at all, such as Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, Virginia, West Virginia, and more. Here in Indiana, the practice of electrology is regulated by the state. In order to meet Indiana’s requirements for licensure, electrology students have to complete a beauty culture or esthetics course, as well as, at least 300 hours of hands-on training.

Your Electrologist

When choosing an Electrologist, the first quality to look for is an active electrology license in the same state. Aside from an active Indiana license, experience is key. Choose a professional who has at least 10 years of hands-on experience in the industry. You can ask about references or request to see client testimonials or portfolios.

As for clinic settings, you want to make sure your Indianapolis electrology clinic operates strictly in adherence to the American Electrology Association’s Infection Control and Sterilization procedures, which includes using electrolysis needles rather than tweezers or photo epilators. Also ask if they offer free consultations, payment plan options, packages, flexible scheduling, and other client amenities.
