Electrolysis for Permanent Hair Removal

There are several options, both over the counter and through professional services, that are marketed for hair removal. However, there are very few options for actual permanent hair removal. In fact, the ONLY permanent hair removal method approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is a treatment called electrolysis. Electrolysis is so widely accepted and recommended as a permanent hair removal solution that even the American Medical Association and Federal Drug Administration supports electrolysis, recognizing it as a safe and permanent method of hair removal.

What Electrolysis Does to Hair

Electrolysis is the process of using heat or chemical energy to permanently remove unwanted body hair by destroying the central growth cells of hair follicles. It is perfect for most areas of the body, including the face, arms, legs, back, shoulders, chest, breasts, bikini line, under arms, chin, upper lip, and more. A specialized electrology medical device called an IB probe is inserted into an individual hair follicle, sending an electrical current straight to the root of the hair. This electrical current cauterizes the papilla, thus hindering the follicle’s ability to produce more hair.

Electrolysis unique compared to laser hair removal and similar technologies because of the science behind the IB probe. Unlike regular “straight needles”, the IB Probe has insulation along it, which keeps discharge of electric current from appearing on the shaft. The current is then able to concentrate at the tip, where the IB Probe approaches the papilla. The tip of the IB Probe is non-insulated and slightly thicker than the insulated shaft, which ensures contact between the IB Probe tip and papilla. It also ensures that the IB Probe will not pierce the skin, and can only enter the skin at the opening of the hair follicle.

Where to Get a Consultation for Electrolysis

Just like most services, there are endless providers to choose from. But when it comes to your body’s largest organ, choosing the right provider is of the upmost importance. As for unwanted hair, services are usually more intensive in nature, making your provider selection vital to your overall outcome. When choosing an Electrologist, the first quality to look for is an active electrology license in the same state. Aside from an active Indiana license, experience is key. Choose a professional who has at least 10 years of hands-on experience in the industry. You can ask about references or request to see client testimonials or portfolios.

The 3 Types of Electrolysis Procedures

In today’s electrology industry, there are three modalities of electrolysis to choose from, galvanic, thermolysis, and one that is a combination of the two. The type you choose will largely depend on your personal preference, hair and skin type, and which clinics are located nearest to you. Continue reading to learn more about each type of electrolysis procedure, and determine which one is best for your permanent hair removal needs.

The Basics of Electrolysis

Electrolysis is a permanent hair removal procedure that uses an electrical current to cauterize the hair follicle’s papilla, or growth center of the hair, which in turn, prevents new hair growth. An IB probe is used to send an electrical current directly to the papilla by inserting it into each individual hair follicle. Over a period of time, and after multiple sessions, all hair growth is eventually full impeded.

Galvanic Electrolysis

Galvanic electrolysis is a chemical process that uses a chemical reaction, rather than an electrical one, to destroy the inner hair growth cells. This approach to hair removal dates back to 1875, and is considered a very outdated, unsafe, and ineffective procedure. In fact, galvanic lye (sodium hydroxide) is a chemically unstable compound, and although it works well to destroy hair growth cells, it continues to penetrate other tissue layers, which can cause damage to the epidermis.

Thermolysis Electrolysis

Putting galvanic electrolysis in the past, thermolysis electrolysis became a better alternative. Appositely known as short-wave electrolysis, this approach uses a short-wave that produces heat to cauterize the papilla. In many cases of thermolysis electrolysis, a higher-intensity current is applied to speed up the process, or, a lower-intensity current is applied for better results overtime.

Combination of Modality

Also referred to as the electrolysis blend, clients have the option of choosing a blended approach of galvanic and thermolysis electrolysis. Basically, this process introduces both a galvanic current and a thermolysis current, for the purpose of destroying the inner hair growth cells. The galvanic current is sent first, while the thermolysis current is sent after to heat up the chemical reaction taking place.

The Process of Electrolysis

Electrolysis is the process of using heat or chemical energy to permanently remove unwanted body hair by destroying the central growth cells of hair follicles. During the process of electrolysis, a very fine probe is inserted into a hair follicle, which in turn, activates an electric current to pass through the needle to the root of the hair, and thus, destroying the papilla. A papilla is a vascular process of connective tissue that extends into and nourishing the root of a hair. As a result of this electric current, the papilla becomes cauterized and the follicle should no longer produce hair.

You will get an individual IB Probe. Unlike regular “straight needles”, an IB Probe has insulation along its shaft which keeps discharge of electric current from appearing on it. The current is able to concentrate at the tip, where the IB Probe approaches the papilla. The tip of the IB Probe is non-insulated and slightly thicker than the insulated shaft. This ensures that contact between the IB Probe tip and papilla occurs. It also ensures that the IB Probe will not pierce the skin, and can only enter the skin at the opening of the hair follicle.

Paying for Electrolysis

Like any permanent cosmetic procedure, electrolysis is high-priced, but still quite affordable. The total cost will depend on several factors, such as the skin type, hair type, amount of hair being removed, and the number of treatments needed to achieve full results. This means that the total cost for electrolysis will differ from person to person. You can expect the average single treatment to cost between $50 and $100 per hour, or $10 to $15 per 100 hair follicles treated. To know for sure, simply consult an Indianapolis Certified Professional Electrologist (C.P.E.) to receive a personalized quote.

Your Ensuing Sessions

The total number of treatments mostly depends on your hair type and the amount of hair you wish to have removed, so the amount of sessions will differ from client to client.  But really, the total number of electrolysis treatments you will require for permanent hair removal is virtually impossible to know until the process begins. Electrolysis can take anywhere from 1 to 4 years on average; longer for facial hair removal. Most clients come in on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, and sessions generally last between 15 and 60 minutes.

Common Misconceptions About Electrolysis

If you are mentally and physically exhausted of shaving, waxing, and hair removal creams, electrolysis just may be the best alternative for getting rid of unwanted hair. In fact, you may have considered electrolysis in the past, only decide against it due to various concerns. Pain and Side Effects

One of the most common reasons why people don’t give electrolysis a second thought is the concern of pain and resulting side effects. There might be horror stories of laser hair removal treatments, and other non-effective versions of hair removal, that have put these thoughts into the minds of consumers. However, electrolysis is not too painful, and does not render too many side effects.

Yes, like all cosmetic treatments, there is bound to be a certain amount of pain and a few side effects; however, the pain is minimal and the side effects are minor. The reality is, you can expect some pinching or poking sensations during the procedures, and a limited amount of reddening, swelling, or sensitivity following each treatment.

Permanency

Many people are under the impression that no permanent method of hair removal truly exists. This is partly due to the ineffectiveness of laser hair removal, which many people confuse for electrolysis. The truth is, electrolysis is the only method of permanent hair removal approved by the FDA. According to a study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, it has a success rate of approximately 93%.

Cost

Like most cosmetic treatments, electrolysis requires more than one session to be successful. In fact, it generally requires up to 6 sessions or more, depending on various factors, like hair type, location, scope, and more. This is due to the fact that hair growth occurs in cycles, alternating between growth and rest periods. This means that some hair follicles are dormant while others are not, and then they switch.

As a result of these facts, many people assume that electrolysis is not affordable. But this is quite the contrary. Because of the innovative technologies available in the field of electrology, coupled with the increase of electrology clinics, the services have never been more affordable. Stayed tuned for our next blog that will discuss the estimated cost of electrolysis!
